With the recent outbreak of COVID-19, many jobs went from an office setting or environment to working from home, also knows as teleworking. The fear of picking up the virus and the six feet distacing and mask wearing created the availability of working from one’s comfort in the home. Many office jobs were still capable of being succesful as all of the duties and activities completed in the office could fairly easily be completed from home as well. This also prevented the termination of many employees, as they were still able to complete tasks without the fear of becoming infected with the virus or being let go from their job.
The use of information and communication technologies has allowed employees to perform work at an approved alternative location, such as a home office. (Merono-Cerdan, 2016) Because technology allows for many jobs to be done from home, this allows companies to provide their employees with such resources to get the job done without having to come in. A computer and phone is almost all individuals need to complete their tasks. This is a benefit for employers specially during the past two years in which we have gone through a pandemic.
A crucial pitfall of teleworking is the absence of co-workers, or your very own work family. Some studies have discussed that individuals that telework have experienced quite negative effects from it, to include greater professional isolation and less organizational commitment on the days they worked entirely from home. (Vriers, Tummers & Bekkers, 2018) While one is in the comfort of their home, having a co-worker allows for consults or the availability of asking questions if one is unsure on what to do. Individuals could experience feeling lonely as it is now only them and a computer and a phone. This could create health issues and change the wellness of the employees.
During the pandemic there was no such choice between coming to the office or working from home. Now that things have changed and methods to diminish the health vulnerability of exposure, employees can better adapt to either option. While it is important that employers get the job done, it is also vital to put the employees first and think of their best benefit.

1. Telework, that is sometimes known as working from home or from a mobile setting outside the usual office etc., can be a very flexible opportunity for many employees and in some cases very positive for an employer. Discuss the possible advantages of such a system as well as its negative pitfalls.
Telework has become much more common since the Covid-19 pandemic. “Telework is a work flexibility that enables eligible employees to perform their duties from an approved alternative worksite (e.g. home or telework center).” (Telework & Remote Work, 2022) Telework has created great flexibility for workers across the country. This type of program allows parents to work from home if they have childcare issues. During Covid-19 it also has helped immunocompromised workers stay out of the public places so they can avoid contracting Covid-19 the best they can. While many people see telework as a great alternative, there are also downfalls to telework. If employees are not in the office, it can be hard for employers to account for the time of the employees. Also, if the workers are hoe and their kids are home it could be hard for the employee to pay attention. I am currently employed with Superior Court in the State of Delaware, they have recently put out a policy for telework that specifically states if you have children that will be home during the workday than you are not eligible for the telework program. In the State of Virginia, “Hundreds of state employees in Virginia have resigned from their jobs. (Dantzler, N., 2022) These employees feel that the new policy the Virginia governor has put into place makes them lose the flexibility that they previously had with telework.
With the use of telework employees feel that their employers care about their safety and their mental health. In many cases employers are understaffed and their employees are over worked and facing burn out. With the option to work from home and get out of the office for some time helps these employees gat a slight break and will hopefully help them feel refreshed on the days that they do have to be in the office.
There are many pros and cons to telework, for some positions telework is a great option and employees may be able to get more work done when they are home. While other positions or home situations will make it harder for employees to get the work done that they need to complete.
