For this essay there are five (5) possible options from which you can choose. Given the range of ideas and concepts covered in this week’s readings there are several directions that can be explored in this essay. Also, as you begin to develop the theme of your final essay, this will give you an opportunity to shape this week’s essay to conform to the overall thesis. Below are five different opitions to consider for the essay. Each of these coincide with a particular video clip. Because of this it is entirely possible to mix and match the prompts. You may want to review them and create an essay that best addresses the theme or themes associated with the longer essay to be submitted at the end of the course. The objective here is to give you some latitude and space to create what works best for your writing.

Essay Prompts
1) Lord of the Flies and The Matrix
Peter Block’s “Insights into Transformation” identifies the ideas associated with other community theorists: John McKnight, Werner Ernhard, Robert Putnam, Christopher Alexander and Peter Koestenbaum. Review video clip #1 with these theorists in mind and identify aspects that identify Asset Based Community Development (McKnight), Language, Context and Possibility (Erhard), Social Capital (Putnam), Aliveness, Wholeness and Unfolding (Alexander), and/or Paradox, Freedom and Accountability. Be sure to identify the film clip and the reading associated with it.
2) Sorry to Bother You
Review video clip # 2 to identify the importance of context in community transformation. Be sure to identify the theorist associated with each one. Things to consider: the power of language connected to transformation, the importance of associations, a focus on gifts, and the possibilities represented for members of the community. The goal of this essay is to convey an understanding of context and it’s importance in developing strategies for transforming communities. The essay should recognize and provide examples for the significance of choice and a desire to be accountable to a given community.
3) Captain Fantastic and The Handmaid’s Tale
Review video clip # 3 and determine the limitations and problems associated with shifting the context for community. Can fragmentation or breakdown be identified? How is the symptom, rather than the problem, addressed? Is there a landscape of retribution? What are the possibilities for community restoration? Be sure to connect the films to the readings to support your claims.
4) Tyrant and 13th
Review video clip # 4 and identify the culture of retribution that reinforces strong leadership. How is “strong” synonymous with autocratic? How is the future legislated in an effort to mandate morality? What examples are there of speaking truth to power? Is this represented as a threat? The objective of this essay is to examine Block’s concept of “romanticized leadership.” What examples can be drawn from the video that implicate the reading?
5) Manufacturing Consent (Noam Chomsky), Morning Joe, Bowling for Columbine
How does video clip # 5 reflect the decisions to broadcast all of the reasons we have to be afraid? What is the retributive agenda and what example does the video offer? What part of Block’s theory are implicated? In what ways does the video represent the marketing of fear and fault? How does it address the role that technology plays as something to fear?
