Just focus on problem, not on solution yet.
First, reflect on these questions:
Why is this a problem worth solving (time/effort/cost)?
What are the impacts of this issue in your community? Who is most effected? Why?
What have been some ways people have responded to this issue (in or outside your community).
Are there key terms in understanding this issue or problem?
Then, post a full page double spaced “defining your problem/issue” for your reader. You are not proposing a large scale solution or problem. You are focusing on something within your community, think locally. Thus, in this full page you must “PROVE” this is a problem to your reader. You must appeal to the readers ethos, pathos and logos. You do not need to outline each rhetorical appeal, rather, you will share information that appeals to your credibility/authority (using personal testimony as someone involved or citing credible source); emotions (using examples that prompt feelings – fear, anger, joy); logical (how or why this issue needs to be solved – cause and effect).
Some examples of one-page defining problem outlines:
Issue: Screen time in family –> in one page double spaced prove this issue is a problem
Ethos Example: Cite how family doctor spoke about impacts on vision and development of children
Pathos Example: Share how family dinners have changed and disheartening impact on communication
Logos Example: Share cause and effect of family quality time and too much screen time (tv/phone/computer/video games/social media) equates to less quality family time in home
Problem: Sex Education in local high school campus does not include LGBTQ+ resources –> in one page double spaced prove this issue is a problem
Ethos: Provide information of how safe sex education impacts community with statistics of prevention
Pathos: Provide examples from student testimony of how and why their experience of being excluded feels painful and need not met
Logos: logically appeal to STD and safe sex education to be inclusive of all orientations
***Remember these are one page double spaced pages MLA format, just focusing on proving there is a problem or issue – no exploration of solution is needed yet.
